| The engine | The Book is scatter AND wild: 3+ anywhere trigger 10 free spins (5 Books also pay 200x on the trigger spin itself). Before the round runs, ONE random symbol becomes the expanding special, filling its whole reel on paying lines. Retriggers add 10 spins on the SAME symbol, unlimited |

The winning line
Book of Dead tells you what a round might be worth before it even starts. Honestly, the expanding-symbol pick sets a visible ceiling. Rich Wilde, Anubis, or Horus can reach +200x to 5,000x. Pharaoh or Scarab sit around ~+100x, while the card ranks top out at roughly ~+20x. That means the exit gate shifts with the pick. Mind you, verify 96.21% against a ladder bottoming at 84.18%, hunt the Book using the community’s 1-in-192 figure, then cash at the gate the pick gives you.
Step 1 — Climb down the 12-point ladder before the wallet opens
There are five certified tiers. Yes, the bottom two, 87.25% and 84.18%, are rare but genuine. Against the default, the floor build adds roughly A$120 in expected loss per A$1,000 wagered. No play style claws that back. Well, any brand burying the figure inside a multi-click “Game Rules” PDF gets treated as the floor until it proves otherwise.
Action: Check the RTP line before depositing. At 96.21%, use A$0.50 with A$200 or A$1.00 with A$400. That gives 400-spin cover against the colder trigger figure.
Watch for: “RTP varies by operator” without an actual number. That is disclosure, not an answer.
Decision branches:
- If 96.21% → calibrated stake, full plan.
- If 94.25% → playable but soft; kitty down 25% to absorb ~A$20 extra per A$1,000.
- If 91.25%, 87.25%, 84.18%, or nothing shown → close the tab. The ladder’s lower half is unplayable arithmetic.
Step 2 — Hunt the Book at 1-in-192
The Book does double duty. It substitutes as a wild and also triggers as a scatter with 3+ anywhere. Sources disagree on frequency. Reviewers quote 1-in-113, while 8.3 million community spins point to 1-in-192. Plan around the colder figure. Base wins arrive about every 3.8 spins, just enough to feed a little value back and make the wait feel less severe than it really is.
Action: Keep the calibrated stake flat for the full hunt, with the spin count written on paper.
Watch for: Two Books on a spin, which is a near-trigger with zero predictive value. Also keep an eye on the five-Book screen. It pays 200x for the scatters and awards the round in the same hit.
Decision branches:
- If two Books land → flat stake holds; the next 20 spins are a tilt window only if you open it.
- If 5 Books drop → 200x banked on the spot plus 10 spins; Step 3 at the locked stake.
- If 250 spins close with no scatter pair → one notch down (A$1.00 → A$0.50) to stretch cover through the cold.
- If the roll breaks 60% mid-hunt → out at the next clean break; no feature is owed to a 400-spin drought.
Step 3 — Read the pick as the round’s printed ceiling
Before spin one of the feature, the game randomly crowns a symbol as the expander. That reveal IS the round’s valuation. Rich Wilde expanding across five reels opens the 5,000x path. Anubis and Horus can realistically reach +200x to +800x. Pharaoh and Scarab rarely pass +200x. Card ranks pull feature EV down with a ~+20x ceiling. You cannot influence anything once the round begins. Still, the exit gate afterward should be fixed as soon as the pick appears.
Action: Set the post-round gate by tier before the spins begin. Go with +200x for a high-pay pick, +100x for mid, and +75x for low. Write it down.
Watch for: Retriggers. Landing 3+ Books during the round adds 10 more spins with the SAME expander, and there is no stated limit. On a high-pay pick, every retrigger simply stretches the ceiling.
Decision branches:
- If Rich Wilde is crowned → ride everything; this is the only moment the variance leans your way.
- If Anubis/Horus → full ride, bank at close against the +200x gate.
- If Pharaoh/Scarab → full ride, gate at +100x. Mid-pay expansions flatter and rarely deliver.
- If a card rank → the round still owes its trigger value. Close at +75x or return to the hunt at the SAME stake. Of course, no second-feature chase unless the kitty still sits at 100%+ of deposit.
Step 4 — Cash the tiered gate; decline the coin-flip
The round plays itself through to the end. Then the decision comes back, and it is binary. Leave after a gate hit, or allow one more disciplined hunt window. The Pharaoh-tier result causes the usual mistake. An “average” finish feels disappointing, the player chases another feature, then the next one bricks the kitty. The gamble button after base wins offers double on a colour or quadruple on a suit, with zero player edge. Decline it every time.
Action: Judge the close in stake multiples. At A$0.50, +200x equals A$100. +500x equals A$250, and the cap equals A$2,500. Gate hit, move the funds out of the casino balance before the cooldown urge arrives.
Watch for: The urge to chase a “make-up feature” after a mid or low pick. To be fair, on this title that reflex works harder for the house than anything else.
Decision branches:
- If the close clears its gate → session over, withdrawal made.
- If +50x-to-gate → banked; one more 200-spin window at the same stake if the day isn’t covered.
- If under +50x (the modal dead bonus on low picks) → one more window, and a second dead bonus closes the tab unconditionally.
- If the cap lands → A$2,500 at A$0.50 walks out the door with you, immediately.
The maths that backs the playbook
Three numbers control the whole plan. They are the σ band, the trigger band, plus the pick distribution. The σ estimate is ≈8-14 per A$1, derived because no PAR sheet exists. The 5,000x cap adds heavily but stays within bounds, with zero cap-hits recorded across 8.3 million spins. Trigger variance contributes ~7.5, while base hits add ~1.1. The trigger band sits at 1/113-1/192, and the symbol pick sorts feature EV into tiers before the round starts. At A$0.50 across 400 spins, the one-sigma session band is A$60-110. A A$200 kitty covers the median session, grazes the edge during a 1-σ downswing, and busts within 16% of sessions on a 2-σ swing. That is precisely what the 60% mid-hunt floor accounts for. Since the pick tiers make one feature behave like three different games, the +200/+100/+75 gates stop you judging every tier by the same standard. Unlimited retriggers with the same symbol make extended rounds far more valuable on high picks because each extra 10 spins attacks the same ceiling again. The 12-point RTP ladder then scales every figure by the operator’s chosen build. At 84.18%, the toll quadruples. No exit gate rescues the maths. Honestly, check the ladder first, fund the coverage second, use tiered exits every time, and never touch the gamble button.
What breaks the playbook
- Depositing before the ladder check. Five tiers to 84.18% exist. The floor charges A$120 extra per A$1,000, making it the most expensive skipped click in the catalogue.
- Planning on 1-in-113. The 8.3-million-spin sample says 1-in-192. You’d think the optimistic figure would be close, but it understates the wait by 70%.
- Holding every round to +200x. Pick tiers print different ceilings. Gating a Scarab round like a Rich Wilde round guarantees disappointment and invites the chase.
- Chasing the make-up feature after a card-rank pick. The low tier bled EV as designed. The second hunt needs a full kitty, not a grudge.
- Taking the gamble. Double-or-nothing on a colour is the house selling you variance at par. It calls that a feature.
The cut-off
Ladder gate: Verify 96.21%, or accept one tier below only with a trimmed kitty. The lower three tiers send you straight back to the lobby.
Cover law: Bankroll 400x stake. Dropping below 60% during the hunt ends the session at the next break.
Tiered gates: +200x high / +100x mid / +75x low. Set the gate when the pick appears and honour it when the round closes.
Dead-bonus law: Two dead rounds in one session shut the tab. Hitting the cap shuts the account for the night.

Game rules
Base game
You get a 5×3 grid, 10 selectable paylines and wins built left-to-right from reel one. The Book of Dead symbol does two jobs in the base game. It substitutes as a wild for every regular symbol. At the same time, it counts as the scatter. So, honestly, a stack of Books can land a line payout and open the bonus on that same spin. Any win can also feed into the optional card-guess gamble.
- The game uses a 5×3 grid with 10 selectable paylines, from 1 to 10, with 10 set by default.
- Every win pays left-to-right, starting from reel 1.
- Book of Dead substitutes for every regular symbol on a payline.
- Five Books on a payline return 200× total stake as the scatter pay.
- There is an optional gamble on any base-game win. Card colour doubles the payout, while card suit quadruples it.
Free spins
Three or more Book scatters anywhere on the reels open the bonus. You always receive 10 free spins, mind you, regardless of how many scatters landed. One random symbol is chosen to expand before the round begins. If that pick is Rich Wilde, you’re on the max-win path.
- Any 3, 4 or 5 Book scatters trigger the bonus. The award is always 10 free spins, regardless of the trigger count.
- A 5-scatter trigger also pays 200× total stake as a scatter win.
- Before the free spins begin, one regular symbol is randomly selected as the expanding symbol.
- During free spins, the selected symbol fills its entire 3-position reel whenever doing so can create a paying line.
- Land 3+ more Books during free spins and another 10 spins are added. The SAME expanding symbol carries over, and there is no retrigger cap.
Expanding symbol mechanic
The cap rides on the expanding symbol, but the mechanic does not fire on every spin. The selected symbol expands only when it can make a line win. No payline means no expansion. That’s why, of course, every Book of Dead player wants Rich Wilde showing across several reels on the same spin. Get a few reels packed with expanded Wildes on the 10-line layout and the bonus becomes a very different round.
- The expanding symbol is picked at random from the regulars. The pool includes Rich Wilde and Anubis, plus Horus, Pharaoh or A/K/Q/J/10.
- Whenever the selected symbol can create a payline win, every instance expands to cover all 3 positions on its reel.
- Book of Dead can substitute for the selected symbol. When a line needs them, the Book wilds expand alongside it.
- Once expanded symbols cover a reel, they ignore line direction and count as 3 stacked instances.
- The best-case path is Rich Wilde being selected, then landing across all 5 reels. That produces the 5,000× total bet max win.
Max-win cap
The cap is 5,000× total bet. Play’n GO does not document any separate “cap reached” termination behaviour. To be fair, it does not need to, because 5,000× is simply the natural top of the expanding-symbol maths when Rich Wilde lands across all five reels during free spins.
- The cap is 5,000× total bet across every RTP tier.
- It is triggered by 5× Rich Wilde through the expanding-symbol mechanic during free spins.
- Play’n GO has not disclosed the max-win probability. No community sample has been published either.

RTP versions
Play’n GO certifies Book of Dead at five separate RTPs, with operators free to choose which one they run. That is a broader ladder than you see on most single titles. The 96.21% default appears at most AU-facing offshore brands. Mind you, the lower tiers are still out there. A player who skips the in-game info card can end up on the 87% or 84% version without even realising it.
| Tier | Notes |
|---|---|
| 96.21% | Default tier; most AU-facing offshore brands |
| 94.25% | Operator-configured low tier; common at lower-margin operators |
| 91.25% | Rare; not common at AU-facing brands |
| 87.25% | Very rare; flagged when seen |
| 84.18% | Avoid this one; worth checking the in-game info before sitting in |
The 84.18% tier sits roughly 12 percentage points below the default. Over the long run, a punter on that version bleeds an extra A$12 per A$100 wagered compared with the 96.21% default. Honestly, open the in-game “i” panel and read the certified RTP before settling in for any extended session.
Game series
Book of Dead is the original Rich Wilde Egyptian release. It is also the title that built Play’n GO’s “Rich Wilde” franchise and its “Book of” range. Rich Wilde later returned in The Book of Madness and Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness, as well as the Aztec lineage and other releases. Play’n GO then followed up in 2025 with Book of Dead Go Collect. That game uses a Hold-and-Spin “Go Collect” mechanic and runs on different maths. It is a separate slot, so don’t treat the 2025 release as a re-skin of the 2016 original.
Provider context
Play’n GO has operated in the European market for over two decades. It holds licences at the MGA and UK Gambling Commission, plus Gibraltar and several US states. Its “Book of” range includes Book of Dead and Book of Mrs Claus, with Book of Madness and the Cleopatra-adjacent titles rounding it out. You’d think the template had been copied enough by now, but it remains one of the most cloned slot formats in the industry. Inside that range, Book of Dead is still the title operators surface first. It is also the one most players request by name.
FAQ
Q: What’s the actual max win on Book of Dead?
A: The max win is 5,000× total bet. You need Rich Wilde selected as the expanding symbol, then it must land across all five reels during free spins.
Q: Does the bonus retrigger?
A: Yes. Land 3+ more Books during the bonus and you get another 10 spins, with the same expanding symbol carried over. There is no retrigger cap, so it is theoretically infinite.
Q: Is there a bonus buy on Book of Dead?
A: No, not on the original game. The 2016 release has no buy feature. The 2025 sequel, “Book of Dead Go Collect”, is a different slot with different features.
Q: How many RTP tiers does Book of Dead have?
A: There are five: 96.21% / 94.25% / 91.25% / 87.25% / 84.18%. Most AU-facing offshore brands run the 96.21% default. Still, check the in-game info card before sitting in.
Q: Is the gamble feature worth using?
A: Gamble features are zero-EV by design. The card-colour double is a 50/50, while the suit quadruple is 25%. Mathematically, it is neutral. Every gamble does add variance to your session, though, and that is the only real impact.
